What is a contractor profit diagnostic?

A contractor profit diagnostic is a focused, fixed-fee analytical engagement that audits the four levers driving net profit in a construction business: pricing and markup, fully-burdened labour cost, overhead structure, and job-level cost capture. The deliverable is a written 8–12 page report with prioritized 90-day actions, plus two reusable calculators populated with your numbers (the labour burden calculator and the markup/breakeven calculator).

Industry context: the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA) reports that 81% of contractors do not know their true labour burden, and only 19% set monthly overhead, profit, and sales targets. The diagnostic exists to close that gap with your own numbers — not a benchmark.

This engagement is not bookkeeping clean-up, tax preparation, QuickBooks setup, or business valuation. Those stay with your accountant. This is profit-and-pricing diagnostics, delivered by someone who has actually run construction businesses for 35+ years.

Who is this for?

The profit diagnostic is built for:

This is the right starting engagement if you're saying any of these out loud:

If those aren't your questions, see the Systems Diagnostic or the Sales Pipeline Diagnostic instead.

What you walk away with

The deliverable is concrete. By the end of the engagement you will have:

The report is yours. Whether or not you continue working with Tumbleweed Consulting after the diagnostic, the report and the calculators are your property.

What's included

What you need to provide

The intake takes most clients about 2 hours over 3–5 days. You upload to a private Google Drive folder we provide.

If your bookkeeping is more than 3 months behind, the engagement pauses and we refer you to a bookkeeper. We do not run analysis on data that isn't workable.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

How much does a contractor profit diagnostic cost in BC?

Tumbleweed Consulting's profit diagnostic is $1,500 CAD, fixed-fee. The fee is paid 50% on signing and 50% on delivery of the written report. Comparable diagnostics from construction-specialist consultants range from $1,500 to $3,500 across North America.

How long does the engagement take?

2–3 weeks from receipt of complete intake to written report. The owner's time investment is about 2 hours over 3–5 days for intake, plus the 60-minute findings call.

What if my books are messy or behind?

If your bookkeeping is more than 3 months stale, the engagement pauses. Eddy refers you to a bookkeeper, and the engagement resumes once the books are workable. No analysis is run on unreliable data.

Can I do this remotely?

Yes. The entire engagement runs by Zoom and Google Drive. Eddy is based in Langley, BC, but serves contractors across Canada.

What if I want all three diagnostics — profit, systems, and sales?

The Full Contractor Health Check covers profit, systems, and sales together for $4,000 — saving $500 versus buying the three separately, plus adding a strategic layer (12-month forward model, owner load map, risk register).

Is the report shareable?

Yes. The report is yours. You can share it with your accountant, bookkeeper, business partner, banker, or spouse. Confidentiality binds Eddy; it does not bind you.

Will Eddy try to upsell me?

At the 30-day check-in call, if continuing into coaching makes sense, you'll talk about it. If it doesn't, you'll talk about that too. Eddy refers clients to other consultants regularly when his engagement isn't the right fit.
